You inject Wegovy under the skin once a week using an injection pen.
You’ll start with a dose of 0.25mg, which will increase every four weeks until you reach the maximum maintenance dose of 2.4mg.
If you struggle with side effects or find a lower dose of Wegovy helps you to achieve your healthy weight loss goal, you may not need to continue to increase the dose as per the recommended guidelines.
Our clinical team can also guide you on what to do next when you reach a healthy body mass index (BMI).

Wegovy is a medicine for weight loss and weight maintenance that contains the active substance
semaglutide. It is similar to a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) that is released
from the intestine after a meal. Wegovy works by acting on receptors in the brain that control your
appetite, causing you to feel fuller and less hungry and experience less craving for food. This will help you eat less food and reduce your body weight. Wegovy should be used with a reduced calorie meal plan and increased physical activity.
Patients are eligible for treatment if they have at least one weight-related comorbidity, such as hypertension or cardiovascular disease, and either a BMI of at least 35 or a BMI of 30 to 34.9.
Wegovy , which is also known as semaglutide, works by mimicking a hormone that targets areas of the brain involved in regulating appetite and food intake. This can help you eat less, which can lead to weight loss.
How long does Wegovy stay in your system?
Wegovy stays in your body for 5–7 weeks after your last dose.
How long does Wegovy take to work?
Wegovy starts working straight away, and you should start feeling fuller after your first few doses. However, people respond to medicines in different ways, so there’s no set time for when you’ll start to see results. It might take several weeks before the full effects are seen. If you do not see any results within 6 weeks of taking Wegovy, your doctor may want to try an alternative treatment.
Wegovy has been proven to be an effective tool for weight loss. In a 68-week medical study of 1961 adults living with obesity or excess weight with a related medical problem, about one in three achieved a 20% reduction in weight (in conjunction with a plan of reduced-calorie meals and increased physical activity).
• 83% of adults taking Wegovy lost 5% or more weight, compared to 31% taking a placebo
• 66% of adults taking Wegovy lost 10% or more weight, compared to 12% taking a placebo
• 48% of adults taking Wegovy lost 15% or more weight, compared to 5% taking a placebo
• 30% of people taking Wegovy lost 20% or more weight, compared to 2% of people taking a placebo
Wegovy can be prescribed for adults with a BMI over 30, or a BMI over 27 with weight-related conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease or sleep apnoea.
You should not take Wegovy if:
you’re pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
you have had a serious allergic reaction to any of the ingredients in Wegovy
you or any of your family have ever had a type of thyroid cancer called medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC)
you have an endocrine system condition called Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
In addition, you should tell your doctor if you:
have had problems with your pancreas or kidneys
have type 2 diabetes and a history of diabetic retinopathy
have been depressed, suicidal or have had mental health issues
are breastfeeding
Wegovy is taken once a week, any time of day, with or without food.
Wegovy comes in 5 different doses: 0.25 mg, 1 mg, 1.7 mg, and 2.4 mg. Each dose comes in its own colour pen.
Wegovy dosage starts low and increases gradually as you get used to the medication. This is done over a period of a few months.
Month 1:
You will most likely start with the recommended dose of is 0.25mg.
Month 2:
Your dose will be increased to 0.5mg one a week.
Month 3:
Your dose will be increased to 1mg.
Month 4:
Your dose will be increased to 1.7mg
Month 5 and beyond:
After Month 4, your dose will be increased to 2.4mg. This is the dose you will continue taking for the rest of your treatment.
To help you make sure you’re always using the correct dose, your doctor will give you clear advice and instructions. Each dose of Wegovy also comes in a different colour, so you will quickly and easily be able to tell which dose you need and what it looks like.
You will always be given a clear dosing schedule by our doctors and they will be available to support you if you have any questions or need help.
Wegovy is prescription-only. You can not purchase Wegovy legally without a prescription.
Can I get Wegovy over the counter?
No, you cannot get Wegovy over the counter as it is a prescription-only medication. This means you will need to speak to a doctor and have a health assessment to make sure that Wegovy is safe and appropriate for you to take.
Take Wegovy 1 time each week, on the same day each week, at any time of the day. You may change the day of the week you take Wegovy as long as your last dose was given 2 or more days before.
If you miss a dose of Wegovy and the next scheduled dose is more than 2 days away (48 hours), take the missed dose as soon as possible.
If you miss a dose of Wegovy and the next scheduled dose is less than 2 days away (48 hours), do not administer the dose. Take your next dose on the regularly scheduled day.
If you miss doses of Wegovy for more than 2 weeks, take your next dose on the regularly scheduled day or call your health care provider to talk about how to restart your treatment.
It's important to properly dispose of your used Wegovy pens. Do not throw the pen away in your household trash. Instead, use a sharps disposal container or a sturdy household container with a tight-fitting lid, like a heavy-duty plastic container. Other requirements include puncture resistant, upright and stable during use, leak resistant, and properly labeled.
Wegovy is manufactured by US pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk Inc.
Wegovy’s active ingredient, semaglutide, is currently used as a type 2 diabetes treatment under the brand name Ozempic. Ozempic isn’t licensed as a weight loss treatment in the UK. It is also delivered as a weekly injection but contains a much lower dose of semaglutide. The starting dose of Ozempic is generally 0.25mg, which is gradually increased to a maximum dose of 1mg. Wegovy also begins at 0.25mg but the dose is increased to a maximum of 2.4mg over 16 weeks.
